Fona Conservation offers grants for research on nature conservation and management, nationally and internationally. There is a grant round three times a year. The grant amounts to a maximum of € 750,-. The number of possible grants is determined annually, based on the foundation’s income and expenditure.
Apply for a grant
Applying for a grant is done via the standard application form. The completed application form and associated files should be sent by email to the Fona Conservation administration. The grant applications may be submitted in either Dutch or English.
The deadlines for submitting grants are January 5, April 1 and October 1 each calendar year.
Grant conditions
The conditions below apply to the subsidy application. If all conditions are met, the grant application will be considered.
- The research in the application is related to national or international nature conservation;
- The research in the application includes fieldwork and/or visits abroad for which costs are incurred; in the case of ecological research the applicant explains how the knowledge thus developed can be used for nature conservation;
- The applicant is enrolled at a Dutch university or college;
- The applicant is pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree;
- The applicant has not previously received a grant from Fona Conservation;
- The application form and associated files must be submitted prior to the start of the fieldwork of the project of the application;
- The application form must be completed in its entirety and the associated documents / files must be submitted simultaneously. A full (academic) proposal may also be included in the application but does not serve as a substitute for the requested information about the intended research.
The applicant will receive notification of whether the grant has been awarded within approximately one month after the grant round deadline.
Grant criteria
All applications that meet the above grant conditions will be thoroughly assessed by the Fona Conservation board. They select the best applications, which are awarded a grant. The board members have relevant knowledge and experience with scientific research and nature conservation. This allows them to provide a thorough assessment of grant applications and provide feedback if necessary. Important points that the board takes into account when awarding grant applications are:
- The significance of the research for nature conservation.
- The completeness and quality of the research proposal.
- The completeness and quality of the application.
- Financial substantiation
- The personal motivation.
Payment of grants
Fona Conservation will proceed with the payment of grants when the final report, summary in English and a short financial statement are received. The report must be received by Fona Conservation within 2 years after the grant was awarded. The submitted summary will be published on the Fona Conservation website. The applications are kept for a maximum of 7 years.
